Scientists still debate exactly how the pyramids were built, but we know that thousands of workers moved massive stone blocks using ramps, levers, and rollers. The workers were not slaves but skilled laborers who were well-fed and respected.

Pharaohs were the kings and queens of ancient Egypt. They were believed to be living gods on Earth! The word "pharaoh" means "great house" in ancient Egyptian.

Khufu (2589-2566 BCE)

Built the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest and largest of the three pyramids.

Hatshepsut (1479-1458 BCE)

One of the most successful female pharaohs. She brought great wealth to Egypt through trade.

Tutankhamun (1334-1325 BCE)

The "Boy King" who became pharaoh at age 9. His tomb was discovered in 1922 filled with treasures!

Cleopatra VII (51-30 BCE)

The last pharaoh of Egypt. She was known for her intelligence and spoke many languages.

Ancient Egyptian Writing

Hieroglyphics were the writing system of ancient Egypt. The word means "sacred carvings" in Greek. There were over 700 different symbols!

For thousands of years, no one could read hieroglyphics. Then in 1799, the Rosetta Stone was discovered, which helped scholars decode this ancient language.
